War Trauma: Help Ukrainian Kids Recover
In Ukraine, children face the harsh realities of war every day. They see destruction, hear terrifying news, and live with uncertainty. Many struggle to process their emotions, and without help, trauma can shape their future in ways we cannot yet see
Jacaranda: a proven path towards recovery
Children need a safe space to express their pain, fears, and confusion. Jacaranda is a 10-day trauma recovery program designed to meet this need. Developed by American clinical psychologist Dr. Tim Friesen, it has already helped children in war-torn countries worldwide. Watch the video about it.
This program trains adults to create a nurturing environment where children can start to recover through structured play, storytelling, and self-regulation activities. The foundation of Jacaranda is the “gift of presence” – giving children undivided attention and unconditional love so they feel heard, valued, and safe.
How the program works

First 5 days: 20 adults, including pastors, church workers and NGO staff, receive intensive training in trauma-sensitive care. They learn how trauma affects children, process their own experiences and develop skills in healing play and emotional
regulation.
Next 5 days: These trained adults supervise a recovery camp for 40 war-traumatised children from the Kyiv region. Through small ‘family groups’, structured activities and personal attention, the children experience emotional safety and connection. This helps them to start processing their trauma.
Date and location
Jacaranda will take place at a conference centre near Kyiv from 20 to 29 August 2025.
