Restoring dignity through purpose, food, and income
In the Oleksandrivka region (Donbas), we provide chickens and vegetable seeds. Tending gardens and caring for birds give people reasons to get up each morning.
In Ivano-Frankivsk (western Ukraine), we support a soup kitchen. These meals – served with love and listening ears – remind people on the margins that somebody still cares.
Livelihoods supports three initiatives:
- Seeds of Hope
- Chickens4Health
- Meal with Love
Impact so far
- 400+ households received vegetable seeds,
- 35+ households earn income from chickens.
- 10 + homeless people receive a meal made with love each week.
Seeds of Hope
The need
In Eastern Ukraine, many people have lost their jobs or live on meager pensions. They would love to grow vegetables, but money for seeds goes to medicines or winter heating. Rich, black soil behind their homes lies unused.
The solution
Our partner Yevhen Nadiuk saw this need in Oleksandrivka. Together, we created Seeds of Hope. With our funding, he buys vegetable seeds locally and distributes them to households in need.
What it means
This is about more than fresh vegetables in summer and pickled produce in winter. It’s about people stepping outside again to care for their land and feeling proud as they plant, tend, and harvest.
Between 2022 and 2025, we provided over 600 seed sets in the Oleksandrivka region. The project was put on hold at the end of 2025 due to the advancing frontline. We are looking for other ways to continue this initiative.
“The people we help gain hope and a reason to live.”

Chickens4Health
Eggs boost health, income and purpose
The opportunity
Chickens scratching in the yard are a familiar sight in rural Ukraine. The birds thrive on corn and kitchen scraps. Many villagers in Oleksandrivka long to buy a few chickens and a cockerel but cannot afford them.
How it works
Together with partner Yevhen Nadiuk, we designed Chickens4Health. Eggs eaten boost physical health. Eggs sold improve economic health.
Three villages participate. In each one, the village leader chose participants who show initiative and entrepreneurial spirit. Each received 10 chickens and a cockerel, so the birds breed and expand the flock. Village leaders track eggs laid, eaten, or sold, and report monthly to Yevhen. This monitoring and encouragement keep participants on track.
“The chickens give people purpose. They care for the birds and the birds care for them. It’s a beautiful thing to see.”

Meal with love
Reminding people on the margins that they matter.
Struggling to survive in a beautiful city
In beautiful Ivano-Frankivsk in Western Ukraine, not everybody has the means to enjoy their surroundings. Older internally displaced people and homeless people struggle to survive, largely forgotten.
A refugee makes the difference
Oksana Pohorelova fled from the Sloviansk region but had the skills and network to rebuild her life. She knows what it’s like to lose your home and has a heart for those on the margins.
Each week, with our support, she and her team prepare a delicious meal for older IDPs and homeless people.
More than food
Oksana and her team listen to stories. They provide haircuts and help fill out government documents. When homeless addicts want help, they bring them to a rehab center.
“When we serve these meals, we’re not just giving food, we’re saying, You matter. We see you.”
