Interview with Oleg and Tetiana Usatiuk

What makes you most proud to be Ukrainian?

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the entire world has realized that the Ukrainian people cannot be enslaved. Ukraine has become a symbol of freedom and self-expression. Therefore, I am proud to be a Ukrainian!

What gives you hope for Ukraine’s future?

In this war, Ukrainians are fulfilling an honorable mission by defending our land and our people from the aggressor. Ukraine will reap the benefits of its sacrifice. I believe that Ukraine will prosper in the future and become an example for all the peoples of the world.

What are the hardest and most rewarding parts of your work?

The hardest part of being a military chaplain is talking to mothers whose sons were killed or children who lost their father. These losses can never be compensated. I listen to them and encourage them. I tell them that their loved ones are real heroes, and they should be proud of them forever, because these sacrifices keep our country standing and will one day make it free.

How does your work affect people’s lives?

The work of a chaplain in war is probably no less important than the work of a unit commander. Commanders provide the military with material means of protection and weapons. I offer soldiers spiritual support, a powerful shield in war. War inflicts spiritual wounds that medicine cannot heal. Prayer and honest conversations are the most effective ways to heal spiritual trauma and offer moral support.

What’s your favorite place in Ukraine?

My hometown of Kyiv, where I was born, where my childhood and youth unfolded, where I studied, where my friends are, and where I now lead my church.

What would you like us to know about Ukraine?

Now there is war, and our country struggles with corruption. But one day, the war will end, and our soldiers will return home with new values forged in battle. These individuals will enter politics, the economy, education, and the military, and help rebuild Ukraine. Then Ukraine will shine as a symbol of freedom and courage for the entire world.

And finally, what’s your favorite Ukrainian dish?

We both love Ukrainian borscht with bacon fat and garlic!
